With its angelic statues and stained-glass windows, the almost humbling aura
of this nationally registered Historic Place makes it, well, a blessing for
those needing to relax and reflect.
It wouldn't be an exaggeration to describe a night at The Abbey Hotel as
heavenly.
Today, the elegant European-style hotel welcomes visitors with stained-glass
windows, a sprawling garden courtyard and an outdoor swimming pool.
The newest jewel in the crown of Iowa's diamond-dazzling hotels, The Abbey
Hotel, is an elegant, 19 room historic hotel sitting atop one of the Quad
Cities' highest Mississippi River bluffs.
If you remember the hotel in the popular TV program Hotel, you have an idea
of The Abbey's style-understated elegance in rich silken draperies with cornices,
floral carpeting and soft color schemes of peach, mauve and blue.
The Quad Cities has many jewels. Among them is The Abbey Hotel, the former
monastery located on a hill overlooking Bettendorf.
Skeptics were puzzled, some even laughed, when Joe Lemon, the San Francisco
lawyer, bought the hulking landmark for a glorified bed and breakfast. A
few million dollars later, it is a halo on the hillside. To begin with, how do you take an old Bettendorf Monastery that has 116 rooms and turn it into a luxury bed and breakfast with 19 guest rooms?
Today, the guarded entry reminds me of a small classy European hotel. I clicked
across gleaming new marble floors, onto a thick Oriental rug, and I began
poking into the guest rooms of what must be the most unique bed-and-breakfast
hotel in the U.S.of A.
Joe Lemon Jr. of Bettendorf is not your average 23 year-old college graduate.
...The Abbey with it's 19 luxurious guest rooms has the ambience of
a European hotel, and Joe Lemon Jr. said he hopes his experiences in Prague
will help him make that feeling a little more authentic.
Joseph Lemon, a California real-estate developer, bought the property in
1991 after he'd attended mass in the chapel. He transformed it into the kind
elegant little hotel of understated luxury that his family had enjoyed in
Europe. The Integrity Awards recognize business excellence while promoting the mission, vision, goals and values of the Better Business Bureau. well as a long-standing history of ethical practices in the marketplace.
If members of the Lemon family want to pray for the success of their business,
they needn't go far.
With 19 guest rooms, a garden courtyard with outdoor swimming pool, a magnificent
Gothic chapel, a grand banquet room with crystal chandeliers accommodating
250 and a formal dinning room for 100, the hotel is acquiring a reputation
not only as a place to stay, but also as a beautiful setting for receptions,
parties and weddings -- with as many as five weddings held here on a
weekend. |

This was one of the finest hotel experiences I've ever had and I've stayed
at many fine hotels. Thank you!
Everyone was great! I have never had service like this, even at the Ritz.
The staff was very warm and personable. We were always addressed by name
and we felt very comfortable and welcomed during our stay. We'll recommend
The Abbey to our friends and family. Service was outstanding!
We had a delightful time celebrating our first wedding anniversary here!
Thanks!
An excellent hotel! This will be on my list of favorite hotels. By the way,
my list is short.
I personally think all areas are worthy of special commendation--I've stayed
in many hotels and motels and this was by far the most unique and homey I've
ever felt. Being so far from home it was great to feel so comfortable and
well taken care of. Thank you so much.
Everyone was excellent. I felt like I was in a home instead of a hotel. Thank
you!
The Sunroom Breakfast was great. Keep up the good work! The pool was great
as well. This is the most refreshing experience I've ever had at a hotel.
Thank you!
All employees certainly understand and effectively express customer service.
Our stay here was a delight--and we will always choose the Abbey first for
return visits.
Last week, I attended a conference at Rock Island Arsenal and had the absolute
pleasure of being a guest at The Abbey Hotel. My job has taken me all over
the world and I feel very qualified to say The Abbey and its staff is a world
class act.
The front desk personnel were above and beyond the call of duty in accommodating
my stay, needs and information. I enjoyed using the Athletic Room too. It
was a breath of fresh air to be able to combine a business trip with such
a superb hotel experience. Thank you for making a usually ho-hum business
trip a rather positive experience. I was in awe with the history of The Abbey
and the Chapel is beautiful! |
